6. Churches

Greek Orthodox churches have dark interiors, with candles and incense creating an eerily beautiful ambience. Look in during a service to hear the priest chanting religious texts. Both men and women should be dressed respectfully, with knees and shoulders covered.

7. August Full Moon

On the night of the August full moon, the Greek Ministry of Culture organizes free entry to all major archaeological sites, which stay open until midnight or 1am, and even stage performances in the grounds. On Crete, these sites include Phaistos, Gortys and Malia.
